This country’s agricultural production will surprise you

Shall we talk about superlatives? That is to say, agricultural world records. Which countries spring to mind?

Would it be Ukraine, known as the ‘breadbasket’ of Europe for its astonishing wheat yields? Brazil, perhaps, as the world’s largest producer of commodities such as coffee and soybeans? Or we could settle on the United States as the world’s largest exporter of agricultural products, and China as the country that produces the most food.

Yet while all those records are valid and easily verified, there’s another country that’s worked itself – agriculturally – into the top echelons of world production, quietly and methodically.

That country’s the Philippines.

Perched precariously across the Pacific Ocean’s typhoon belt, the chain of 7,641 islands that comprises the Philippines probably wouldn’t make it into many people’s top-ranking agricultural producers.

Yet as we saw in our last blog, it’s a country in which FertiGlobal has keen interest – precisely because we’ve already seen for ourselves its quiet determination to deliver agricultural success.

The Philippines may not have the agricultural volume to help feed the world, but it certainly helps feed Asia Pacific. Agriculture ranks third in the Philippine economy, behind services and industry, and provides employment for one-fifth of the workforce.

And that ‘quiet determination’? OK, the Philippines can’t lay claim to a number one position in commodities like coffee or soybeans. But how about the banana, the world’s most popular fruit? Number one exporter in Asia and number two worldwide. It’s the world’s second-biggest producer of coconuts, narrowly behind Indonesia.

But its biggest claim to fame – if you can call it that, given its quiet approach – is the near-total monopoly it has on the production and export of a commodity that’s found its way into applications around the world.

Abacá: the planet’s strongest fibre

Its name, Musa textilis, provides the first clue. Botanist readers will identify this as part of the banana family. Native to the Philippines, it provides an exceptionally strong fibre that’s been used for centuries not only for weaving durable cloth and fabric, but also for robust tasks such as maritime rope. This resilience has lent itself to more modern applications: bank notes, tea bags and as a petroleum-free material for the automobile industry. There’s probably abacá fibre near you right now.

Grown only in the Philippines, Ecuador and Costa Rica, it’s Philippine abacá that dominates the trade with 87 per cent of the global market. In the past – notably during the rapid growth of maritime trade and activity seen in the 19th century – abacá regularly vied with sugar and tobacco as the Philippines’ most valuable export crop. Today, it’s worth around USD100m per year, covering around 140,000 hectares.

Smallholders account for the majority of Philippine abacá production. While harvesting – largely by hand – is labour-intensive, the crop itself is highly sustainable: a plantation can be viable for up to 30-40 years, providing robust soil erosion control on the volcanic slopes where it’s commonly planted and lending itself to intercropping to aid biodiversity. Waste materials are often recycled into organic fertilisers.

Going bananas

If you know about bananas, you’ll know about TR4. You’ll also know that Cavendish is the dominant banana variety grown for export.

And that TR4 and Cavendish are not compatible.

That’s because TR4 – Fusarium Wilt Tropical Race 4, to give it its full name – is the worst enemy of Cavendish. It destroys the plant, slowly but surely, and then remains dormant in the soil, ready to infect any replacement plantings.

The disease first hit the country in 2005, devastating the industry and shrinking production from 89,000ha to just 51,000. While the only ‘cure’ is to plant a resistant variety – difficult to produce, thanks to bananas’ unique genetic composition – the country has also been fighting back by improving farm management practices to better manage the disease, and the deployment of technologies like AI, drones and remote satellite sensing to detect and contain outbreaks at an earlier stage.

Another concerning disease is black sigatoka, brought on by the fungus Mycosphaerella fijiensis. A foliar disease that causes lesions, chlorosis and physical collapse of the leaf, black sigatoka ultimately kills the plant. Control can be achieved through chemical means, but demands an intense spraying programme of up to 50 applications per year – which can still result in a 50% drop in yield.

While the answer to both TR4 and black sigatoka almost certainly lies in the development and commercialisation of new varieties, FertiGlobal has found that its EnNuVi Technology can lessen the impact of the latter disease.

EnNuVi’s patented nutrient-polyphenolic-molecule focuses on strengthening the plant’s natural defence systems. Evidence points to a balanced combination of nutrients – putting the plant in good stead – fortifying the plant, reducing its susceptibility to both biotic and abiotic stresses. Better health promotes increased energy, charging its in-built mechanisms to ward off attack by pathogens such as Mycosphaerella. When a plant resists infection, a farmer needs fewer fungicides.

A trial in the Philippines proposed whether EnNuVi would increase the number of functional leaves on each banana plant, boosting overall plant health and energy levels to help it fight stress and attack from black sigatoka. Of all the EnNuVi products tested, Mantus provided the best result: a 44% increase in functional leaves, over the standard practice, after 45 days.

Of course, EnNuVi products can’t be seen as a direct replacement for a fungicide like mancozeb, because they have no fungicidal properties. But when applied at the correct time in the crop cycle, they can provide growers with an earlier alternative that may alleviate their need for fungicides at a later date.

A Philippine Vision

It’s developments like this that are fuelling FertiGlobal’s enthusiasm for success in the Philippines. More than a jingle: beyond crop nutrition

Now, how about we apply the same thinking to farmers themselves?

That’s exactly what our team at FertiGlobal Philippines has done.

In the next blog, we’re going to uncover the not-so-little secret that is agricultural production in the Philippines. Think of agricultural production in South-East Asia and it will often be Indonesia that first springs to mind, but the Philippines myriad micro-climates and amazing crop diversity has created a nation of agricultural world records.

Before we open the covers of the Filipino agricultural story, let’s look more closely at that farmer health story. As we said, it’s not good enough just to focus on crop health: healthy farmers are also vital in creating healthy, productive and profitable working farms.

So full credit to FertiGlobal’s Team Philippines, who have created a unique farmer-focused customer initiative: the FertiGlobal Farmers Wellness Program.

Combining farmer wellness and stress relief (and adding a healthy pinch of brand engagement!) the team first created a ‘FertiGlobal Jingle’. Then they turned it into an interactive Zumba experience.

What’s Zumba, you might ask? Inspired by the Latin rhythms of rumba and a childhood fascination with Zorro, Colombian dancer Belo Pérez created the aerobic fitness method in 2001. It’s a total body workout, but more fun and engaging.

That’s exactly why Team Philippines adopted it: they wanted to characterise their meetings with a simple, impactful activity that encourages movement, positivity and community participation, all in pursuit of physical and mental well-being.

“It’s all about dancing, exercising and having fun before every gathering,” says one of the team. “Farmers have often been out doing long hours in the fields before they come to a technical meeting; Zumba increases energy and attentiveness, but also creates a new camaraderie and engagement.

“Of course, it’s also memorable. Being known as the ‘music and movement’ meetings certainly helps with strengthening brand recall!”

That’s where the jingle itself comes in. Music has a powerful ability to create memories and connect them with a time and place. Hear a favourite song on the radio and it’s guaranteed that it will prompt memories of time and place too.

So the team also incorporated product messages and FertiGlobal technologies into the jingle. It’s an innovative approach that has helped the team increase familiarity and understanding of FertiGlobal products – and not a PowerPoint presentation in sight.

“Every dance session becomes an opportunity for farmers to reinforce product knowledge while building a stronger emotional connection with the brand. The jingle’s intentionally choreographed to allow anyone to participate, irrespective of age or fitness level.

Going bananas

It’s the world’s most popular fruit: every year, the 100 billion bananas we chomp our way through account for more than three-quarters of the tropical fruit trade. But as news of the first genetically modified banana has recently revealed, it’s a precarious trade.

Nearly every banana sold in every shop, in every country, on every continent, is a clone. They’re all examples of the Cavendish banana. Its ubiquity came about in the 1950s and 1960s because the previous global favourite – the Gros Michel – succumbed to the devastating Panama disease, caused by a form of Fusarium known as Tropical Race 1 (TR1).

The Gros Michel banana was itself a genetic clone, lacking the diversity that might have allowed it to evolve a genetic defence against attack by TR1. Instead, the Cavendish – a higher yielding variety, with thicker skin that made it even better suited to export – was selected from a naturally occurring hybrid that displayed the necessary resistance to TR1. It quickly became the world’s dominant banana variety, grown everywhere from South America to Africa and throughout Asia and into Australia.

But in 1990, a new disease – TR4 – was detected in Taiwan. Now widespread in more than 20 banana-producing countries, according to the FAO, it has put the Cavendish in potentially the same precarious position as the Gros Michel, eighty years ago. We could be facing a banana crisis on a global scale: in an industry worth $25bn, with annual production of more than 125 million tonnes, that’s a chilling thought.

What’s so devastating about Panama disease? Effectively, the total death of the plant: yellowing leaves quickly brown, before falling off. Then the fungus moves into the stem and roots, killing the tissue as it moves throughout the plant. Even replanting is not the solution. Once in the soil, TR4 becomes virtually impossible to eradicate.

It’s for this reason that the Australian government has approved an application from Queensland University of Technology to release QCAV-4, a genetically modified Cavendish variety developed to show resistance to TR4.

The resistance gene, labelled RGA2, has been taken from a wild banana variety found in South-East Asia. Interestingly, the gene is already present, although dormant, in the Cavendish variety. Approval of the variety gives the researchers the go-ahead to trial it in real conditions on farm; there are no plans yet to allow consumers to buy the new GM banana.

They’ll also try to use the CRISPR technique – gene-editing – to introduce the resistant gene, as gene-editing poses fewer hurdles when it comes to acceptance by regulators and consumers.

Another disease the researchers have identified as a target for gene-edited varieties is black sigatoka, brought on by the fungus Mycosphaerella fijiensis. A foliar disease that causes lesions, chlorosis and physical collapse of the leaf, black sigatoka will ultimately cause the death of the plant. Chemical control is possible but requires an intense spraying programme of up to 50 applications every year. Even then, yield may be slashed by as much as 50%.

Adding to this grim outlook is the loss of many of the active ingredients that are most effective against black sigatoka. Mancozeb, for example, has already been banned in many countries; growers still permitted to apply it may nonetheless be prevented from using it, owing to production protocols imposed by their buyers.

But with any genetic solution still some way off, what’s the best option for banana producers facing the headache of black sigatoka? It’s a challenge that FertiGlobal took up.

Finding and commercialising these breakthrough solutions, that can assure farmers of yield and quality while observing regulatory parameters and environmental obligations, are FertiGlobal’s ‘bread and butter’. To help farmers navigate the threat of black sigatoka, we turned to our EnNuVi Technology, the patented nutrient-polyphenolic-molecule that focuses on facilitating the strengthening of the plant’s natural defence systems.

There’s a wealth of evidence to show that a balanced combination of nutrients – putting the plant in good stead – fortifies the plant, reducing its susceptibility to both biotic and abiotic stresses. FertiGlobal took EnNuVi technology to India and the Philippines – respectively the world’s largest and sixth-largest banana producers – for trials.

The first trial, conducted in India, examined the losses induced in banana plants through leaf wilting. Farmer standard practice often saw wilting in more than half of all plants, leading to a loss in crop ROI of over $200/ha. But in plants treated with the EnNuVi-enabled Semia, the percentage of wilting plants was slashed to less than 10%, reducing investment loss by 85%.

Meanwhile, in the Philippines, the trial proposed to see whether EnNuVi would increase the number of functional leaves on each banana plant, boosting overall plant health and energy levels to help it fight stress and attack. Of all the EnNuVi products tested, Mantus provided the best result: a 44% increase in functional leaves, over the standard practice, after 45 days.

So while EnNuVi products can’t be seen as a direct replacement for mancozeb, because they don’t exhibit any fungicidal properties, they can – if applied at the correct time in the crop cycle – provide growers with an earlier alternative that may alleviate their need for fungicides at a later date.
